After 36 seasons as the voice of the New York Yankees, John Sterling has announced his retirement from the broadcast booth. The longtime Yankees radio voice made the announcement Monday, saying that it was time to step away from the microphone.
"I've had an incredible run," Sterling said. "I've been blessed to work with some of the greatest players in baseball history, and I've been able to share their stories with fans all over the world. But it's time for me to step away and enjoy my retirement."
Sterling was honored with an on-field ceremony at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, where he was joined by Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner and former players Bernie Williams and Mariano Rivera. Sterling thanked the fans for their support over the years, and he said that he would always cherish his time as the Yankees' radio voice.
Sterling began his broadcasting career with the Baltimore Bullets in 1963. He also worked for the New York Nets, the Atlanta Hawks, the Atlanta Braves, and the New York Islanders before joining the Yankees in 1989. Sterling was known for his enthusiastic calls, his signature home run call of "It is high, it is far, it is gone!", and his catchphrase "Holy cow!"
Sterling's retirement is a major loss for the Yankees and for baseball fans everywhere. He was one of the most iconic broadcasters in the history of the game, and his voice will be missed by millions of fans.
