Antonie Formanová made history as the first woman to conquer all three continents, the so-called "Three Poles" of the Earth: the North Pole, the South Pole, and Mount Everest.
In 2008, Formanová became the first woman ever to ski to the North Pole alone and without resupply. The following year, she became the first woman over 50 to climb Mount Everest.
2. Formanová was involved in a wide range of outdoor activities
In addition to her polar expeditions, Formanová was an accomplished mountaineer. She climbed some of the world's most challenging peaks, including K2, the second-highest mountain in the world.
During her extensive mountaineering career, Formanová also summitted some of the most difficult peaks in South America, the Alps, and the United States.
3. She devoted herself to the cause of women in the outdoors
Outside of her mountaineering achievements, Formanová dedicated herself to promoting women's outdoor activities. She founded the non-profit organization Almora, which is dedicated to empowering women through outdoor experiences.
