Wake Forest challenges dubious record amid Coastal Carolina's hot streak
CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina University baseball's season will continue Saturday, after the Chanticleers defeated Virginia 6-3 at the NCAA Regionals Friday night.
The win keeps Coastal Carolina (37-19-1) alive in the double-elimination tournament, while Virginia (35-24) is eliminated.
Coastal Carolina will face No. 7 Wake Forest (42-18) Saturday at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. Wake Forest lost to ECU 10-7 Friday night in their first game of the tournament.
The Demon Deacons are 11-15 all-time against Coastal Carolina, including a 14-7 win on March 15 of this season. However, the Chanticleers have won two of the past three meetings, including a 4-1 victory in the 2020 NCAA Regionals.
Coastal Carolina has now won eight of its last nine games, and is 15-4 since May 1.
The Chanticleers took an early lead against Virginia on Friday night, scoring two runs in the first inning on a home run by Zach McCambley.
Coastal Carolina added to its lead with two more runs in the second inning, and took a 6-0 lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Seth Lancaster.
Virginia scored three runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-3, but the Chanticleers held on for the win.
Coastal Carolina starter Nick Parker (6-3) allowed three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four batters and walked two.
Aaron Beasley, Austin Kitchen and Tyler Johnson combined to allow just one hit over the final 4 1/3 innings to close out the win.
McCambley finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Coastal Carolina. Lancaster was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Connor Kurcon was 2-for-4.
Griff O'Ferrall (7-5) took the loss for Virginia. He allowed six runs on nine hits in four innings. He struck out five batters and walked one.
Alex Tappen was 3-for-4 for Virginia, and Jake Gelof was 2-for-4.
